The Tchoupitoulas Street Floodwall Mural is directed by New Orleans International Muralists, a project that promotes cultural preservation through mural arts.
It can be the longest mural in the U.S. WITH YOUR SUPPORT!!
Phase one 6,500 square feet
Phase two 8,500 square feet
The entire mural will be 75,000 square feet, and 5,300 linear feet.
The Tchoupitoulas Floodwall Mural Project was a carefully designed effort between the New Orleans International Muralists volunteers and the New Orleans Flood Protection Authority who granted the necessary permits. This project aims to lengthen the spectrum of arts and cultural heritage offerings available to New Orleans residents and tourists alike.
Located along a highly trafficked corridor the enormous project serves as a teaching opportunity that connects New Orleans’ past, present, and future. Planning for the murals began nearly four years ago. The mile-long historical mural is the first time the Flood Protection Authority has allowed the floodwall to turn from ‘concrete to canvas’– see what WGNO has to say!
oUR mission: cultural preservation, public engagement, and arts education
In keeping with the project’s mission of cultural preservation, public engagement, and arts education, the project founders are committed to organizing volunteer paint days for those interested in helping with the mural installation. Funds are being raised to commission the remaining nine blocks of the mural to celebrate New Orlean’s diverse past. See where the project is headed!
